This year, is the quietest fire situation over the last 10 years on the territory of Russia. According to VEGA satellite service as of May 23, 2013 in the beginning of the year there were fewer than 4,400 fires that have affected the area covered by forest.Such fires were on about 1.1 million hectares, of which about 470 thousand hectares was covered by forest.Total for all types of lands there were fewer than 14,300 fires (including agricultural burns).In comparison, from 2002 to 2012 from the beginning of the year to May 23, there was an average of about 10,000 forest fires that have been on more than 3.5 million hectares (including more than 1.5 million hectares of forested area).

VEGA-PRO Service is created based on long-term developments of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Space Research Institute - IKI (Department of Satellite Monitoring Technologies) in the field of automated methods and technologies for satellite data collection, processing and dissemination.
The VEGA-PRO service was created with support of the Skolkovo Foundation. At present, the VEGA-PRO service development is provided by IKI jointly with the Institute for Space Research of the Earth (IKIZ Ltd.). The VEGA-PRO service is maintained by IKIZ,
participating company of Skolkovo space technologies and telecommunications Cluster.
VEGA-PRO is information service for professional operations with in near-real-time updated satellite data archives and other geospatial information to provide solutions for wide range applications focused at assessment and monitoring of renewable biological resources primarily related to agriculture, forestry and forest industry.
VEGA-PRO service is based on updated in near-real-time data on state of vegetation in Russia and neighboring countries acquired by satellite remote sensing instruments. There are daily updated data archives for any area of Northern Eurasia region from the beginning of the twenty-first century to the present.
The service performs automated satellite data processing, which allows carrying out daily information update.
In particular, VEGA-PRO service is facilitated to analyze the vegetation cover state (for example, agricultural crops and forests) using vegetation indices time-series based on its seasonal and multi-annual dynamics for every single point or user-specified polygon. Information can also be integrated at the level of administrative districts for any region of Russia.
Service is aimed primarily at professionals in agriculture and forestry. Its task is to provide assessment of vegetation state at the different objects (agricultural fields, pastures, hay fields, forest stands, etc.) within the area of interest. In this case, the service users can set borders for object of interest and analyze available data. Thus, for example:
- crop insurance experts can determine consequences of various negative factors on insured crops;
- landowners can monitor crops development progress for agricultural management planning;
- foresters can carry out forest resources assessment and forest area changes caused by fires, logging and other disturbances.
